Northlands presents a great opportunity for Ward 7. The site is already very well serviced by public transit and a dedicated separate bike path. I propose that we end our costly subsidy of Northlands and take this land back. I would keep the urban farm and Rexall and turn the rest into a new walkable community of 4 to 5 story buildings with ground floor retail. To address our shortage of affordable housing a portion of the units in every building would be subsidised. At least one of these buildings should be an assisted living facility for our chronically homeless. I think it’s important to keep the farm as a reminder of our agricultural heritage. There has always been an agricultural connection to Northlands and it’s important we maintain it. Rexall would better serve the public as a community building. I think that it can comfortably house recreational facilities like the ice sheets, as well as serve additional purposes based on public and expert input.
